Blood Rage: Frost Giant

Blood Rage is probably the best game I have in my game collection, but it is unfortunately played far too seldom. Now it’s at the club as we really want to see it more often on the gaming table. 

It’s at the club and the half-finished Frost Giant stood on the painting table… not a good combo.

I have far too many half-finished minis and this one was a good reason to try to get them painted. As usual it didn’t take that much time to actually finish this one, and when I started it was lots of fun, as the mini is great.

So here it is painted and ready for a trip to the club.

Now I’m starting on a few of those other not-finished minis. With some luck they will be all be painted in the not too distant future.

He's huge, as giants tend to be.

Brimstone –Harvesters

 

Here’s a new set of enemies for Shadows of Brimstone – Harvesters.

They are creatures that have built heavy suits to protect them from hostile environments and hostile locals in those environments, making them immune to environment effect and some attacks also.

They have a mission, and that is to harvest Dark Stone, the crystals that power the ‘magical’ properties of the setting and also corrupts both people and creatures, causing mutations. They are rather good at it, and might nick your Dark Stone in a fight.

Anyway, they will be fun to see on the gaming table.

Frogmen from Reaper

More Reaper Bones figures, this time in the form of frogmen, or squogs as Reaper calls them.

Two Squog Warriors and Mudcroak, Squog Shaman.

These will come in handy in adventures in misty rainforests, and I have hope of using them in Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago and maybe even pulp adventures.

Ogre with Table from Heresy

He stood there on the painting table. The Daughter complained that he had been there for ages. Nearly finished, just some detailing to do.

A couple of brush-stroke, a layer of varnish and another mini done. I wonder why it took so long…

The Ogre with Table is another smashing ‘mini’ from Heresy Miniatures. Go check what Andy’s got in his store. He’s one of my favourite sculptors (and a very nice chap) and I’m sure you’ll find one, two or many minis that need to be bought. 

Sylph from Reaper

Another Reaper Bones mini, this time it’s a Sylph, sculpted by Julie Guthrie. It’s a bit different than the metal version.

This is another of the minis my daughter chose for me to paint, and it was rather difficult to finish, as especially the wings were hard to do justice. As it is I painted them white followed by a yellow wash. That turned out far too yellow so I had to drybrush them white to tone everything down a bit. Still to yellow, I think, but I do like the blue dress she wears.

Howling hag and other Ravenloft minis + Hellknight

Here’s the Howling Hag from the Ravenloft game. A not too bad mini, that might see action in other games also.

Next up are Allisa, a female ranger, and Arjhan, a dragonborn fighter. Rather uninspiring sculpts that I really just wanted paint on. Not my best…

Well, it certainly looks better with paint than without.

Just a few more minis and that game is finished. Unfortunately, those same figures are not the funniest of the bunch. They’re all on the painting table, though.

Finally Hellknight, Order of the Nail, sculpted by Bobby Jackson and from my mini-mountain of Reaper Bones figures.

Not the most fantastic of minis, but very fast to finish. Just a couple of different metals and browns followed by a black wash. Done in no time, really, and, to be honest, I finished him just to get a fast dent in the mountain.

I needed that as the last month has been very slow miniatures-wise.

Troll from Blood Rage

Another mini finished, this time a troll from the Blood Rage boardgame. He’s sat there on the painting table and just needed some details done. Another easy mini to move from the mountain of plastic and tin.

For my own future reference I used Citadel Tallarn Flesh with a wash of Army Painter Strong Tone Ink and after that a drybrush of Tallarn Flesh. Hair Vallejo 984 Flat Brown, Strong Tone ink and a light drybrush of 977 Desert Yellow.

Female elf archer from Reaper and female half-orc assassin from Otherworld

The female elf archer comes from the Reaper Bones II kickstarter is a rather nice little figure (but her nose was rather flat and probably miscast), she is called Allistrilee, Elf Archer and is sculpted by Bobby Jackson (Bones 77205 or Dark Heaven Legends 03166). 

She got a more impressionistic paintjob as I’m trying out a couple of new techniques and she volunteered J. Decent result.

This is DAD17 Female half-orc assassin from Otherworld’s Dungeon Adventurers series and sculpted by David Soderquist. Another great figure from Otherworld that is suitably dressed and equipped. 

Hill Giant Krug from Reaper

This is Hill Giant Krug, sculpted by Tre Manor and available from Reaper Miniatures both in metal (03239 at about $40) or in plastics from their Bones range (77313 for $9). I got mine from the Bones II kickstarter.

I used Citadel Tallarn Flesh with a Strong Tone Ink wash for the skin. 

Pretty satisfied with how it all turned out.

He's a rather big bloke...

It’s a really nice miniature and my son David drooled over the finished model and started mumbling about getting himself a new warband for Open Combat. I guess I’m going to meet this brute soon…

Rackham Orcs

I fell in love the Rackham orcs in the days when minis from Rackham was the best you could get. Fantastic details and great sculpts. The downside was and is that they take forever to paint. But you get a very nice mini when you’re finished.

I painted the flesh of these brutes with Citadel Foundation Tallarn Flesh. The other colours… your guess is as good as mine.

I based them on Sally 4^th clear 25mm bases.

I still got 10+ Rackham orcs in the tin-mountain, waiting for paint.

LotR goblins from Games Workshop

The second batch of the figures I got from Thomas. Another quick job, mostly using paints I was already using for something else and finished with one of the usual washes.

Good enough quality for horde-monsters.

Just ten left, and a lonely orc, then my part of the bag is finished.

LotR orcs from Games Workshop

Thomas had bought a bag of assorted assembled but unpainted LotR figures to get hold of the Gondorians, if I remember correctly. He off-loaded the rest of the figures, orcs and goblins, on me (thank you!). They've been in the plastics mountain for far too long now.

All were already assembled (with far too much glue) but still had mould lines and needed some cleaning up. This batch, the orcs, were already spray-painted white, and unfortunately the paint was rather grainy. I coated them with another layer of primer after cleaning up. As usual I washed them with a black wash to get see the details clearly.

I opted for a quick job on these as they probably will be seen in a horde of similar figures, to be quickly slaughtered by the heroes J. Block painting with a limited number of paints, and then washed.

Paints used:

Skin – Citadel Foundation Tallarn Flesh

Leather – Formula P3 Bootstrap Leather, Humbrol 62 Leather and Vallejo 984 Flat Brown

Metal – Vallejo 054 Gunmetal

Wood – Vallejo 843 Cork Brown

Cloth – Citadel Foundation Dheneb Stone, Vallejo 879 Green Brown, 923 Japan Uniform WWII.

Hair - Vallejo 987 Medium Grey, 912 Tan Yellow

Shield – Citadel Scab Red

Washed with Army Painter Strong Tone.

The grasses on the bases are Army Painter 6mm Waistland Tuft.
